Wire Fox Terrier Critique
Judge: Sandra Grant-Hemmings (Ticknock)
I thoroughly enjoyed judging the Wire Fox Terriers at this show. I know how much time and effort goes into preparing a trimmed terrier breed so I am grateful to all the exhibitors who took the time to enter under me. I am also very grateful to Sue Wiggins for keeping my paperwork in order and to Joe Ashe who had a proper loud voice for calling exhibitors to the ring and announcing the winners. All the dogs judged had a correct scissor bite and clean teeth.

Critique for Birmingham & District Fox Terrier Club
19th November 2022
Smooth Fox Terriers
I would like to thank the club for appointing me to judge and giving tickets in Smooths for the first time. It was a privilege to judge an excellent quality entry especially as this was the last time that there will be challenge certificates on offer at this show for Smooths.
The system which alternated the tickets for both coats each year in conjunction with the Fox Terrier Club of Wales has worked perfectly well in the past. In future, the Kennel Club in their infinite wisdom has decreed that Birmingham & District will only have the set of CC’s for Wires with the Fox Terrier Club of Wales only having the set of CC’s for Smooths. With the number of entries for each breed at present(which is unlikely to alter) this obviously penalises Birmingham & District Fox Terrier Club through no fault of their own!
The newly refurbished hall at Shenstone is now much brighter and with delicious homemade refreshments and a grand raffle made for an enjoyable day with a happy atmosphere.
I would like to congratulate the hard working secretary, Lee England and the committee for the well run show, not forgetting my competent stewards, Joe Ashe and Sue Wiggins.
Overall, I was pleased with the quality of the exhibits both dogs and bitches. Mouths were good as were coats and all were shown in a clean condition. In general, rear movement was disappointing with many exhibits moving close behind, lacking drive and with straight stifles. It was a concern that there was only one Smooth puppy entered in the show today.
VETERAN DOG/BITCH (1-0)
1. KETTLE. YOXELLA WARM SPELL BEST VETERAN IN SHOW
7 year old bitch. White, flecked with part black head & ears. Attractive bitch shown in good condition. Pleasing head having a small dark eye. Straight front with a clean neck and correct shoulders. A nice spring of rib and exact tail set. Moved happily but a shade close behind.

Needs more time to mature.

LIMIT DOG (5-0)
A good quality class.
1. SCHONEBERG. EARL VD SCHONENBERGEN. RESERVE DOG C.C.
3 year old mature dog who I liked very much and pushed hard for the C.C. Top quality dog, white with a black head. Well balanced, soundly constructed throughout and of correct size. Pleasing head proportions. Straight front with compact round feet. Clean neck with well laid shoulders. Short coupled body with muscular rear end, moved correctly both ways.
2. JULIANS. LANYONS PRIME SUSPECT
17 month old tan & white dog. Just lacked the maturity of the winner. Liked his sized and overall symmetry. Moved well and kept a level topline in profile. Close decision with the winner.
3. HUGHES, OSBORNE & McKENNA FORGEVALE TOP GUN
OPEN DOG (5-1)
All four quality dogs.
1. DAMS. BURRENCROFT HANDSOME BOY
DOG C.C., BEST OF BREED AND BEST IN SHOW (JUDGED BY MR MALCOLM MURRAY)
The name sums this dog up. 4 year old white with a black head. The star of the day. A stallion of a dog, now fully mature. Masculine but not cloddy. Straight front with good bone standing on tight round feet. Liked his head with a keen expression. Clean neck with well laid shoulders, deep chest with short back. Tail bang on top. Strong muscular hind quarters giving good drive on the move. Quietly handled and showed very well throughout. Congratulations on winning his third C.C. today.
2.HUGHES, OSBORNE & McKENNA. FORGEVALE SUPREMO
White with tan head, unlucky to meet the winner on the day, who was in top form and didn’t put a foot wrong. Many of the same virtues apply but preferred the overalll quality of first. Moved with drive and pleasing side profile. The feet were better on the winner.
3. BROOKES. ZETAMAZ RAINBOW QUEST
4. McLAUGHLAN. NISYROS CROSSFIRE AT AZRAMS
MINOR PUPPY BITCH
NO ENTRIES
PUPPY BITCH (1-0)
1. DOLMAN. ZEBEC ICE CRYSTAL BEST SMOOTH PUPPY
10 month old white with black ears, the only Smooth puppy entered on the day but of good quality. Alert and happy on the move, good turn of stifle which was lacking on many of the exhibits. Feminine head with a cheeky expression, correct front assembly and short coupled. Doesn’t want to grow anymore.
JUNIOR BITCH (3-0)
I liked all three of these.
1. HANNER. BOKMA KIRIE AT BOROVALE. RESERVE BITCH C.C.
Very smart tan & white bitch of correct size, liked her overall symmetry. Clean flat head with typical breed expression. Fair length of neck with well placed shoulders. Good ribs with a short body and level top line. Strong back end and ok tail set. Active and straight on the move, front and rear. To be critical, I would like a slightly longer foreface.
2. BROKES. ZETAMAZ MARASCHINO
16 months old with a black patch and black ears. Finer type than the winner but still in proportion. Liked her happy attitude but she gave her handler a hard time. Just needs to settle more. Overalll, a nice head with fair neck and shoulders. Short coupled with ok back end.
3. McLANGHLIN. LANYONS SECRET & LIES
NOVICE BITCH (1-0)
1. MARSTONS. CHIPSTEAD SNOWFLAKE
15 month tan & white. Nice head and ears but a little full in cheek. Good for body with correct tail set. Moved close in the rear.
SPECIAL BEGINNERS BITCH
NO ENTRIES
POST GRADUTE BITCH (5-0)
1. MARSTON. CHIPSTEAD PETAL
20 months old. I liked this bitch for her overall proportions. Not exaggerated and with no outstanding faults. Correct confirmation and moved parallel both ways with a level top line in side profile. Not disgraced in the challenge.
2. VICKERS & DAMS. TAMEDALE SISKIN
14 month old tan & white bitch. Looked a picture when stacked but didn't seem to like the surroundings and therefore didn't move with any verve, which was a pity. Fair head with small well set ears. Good legs and feet. Ok body and rear end.
3. MORRIS. SANAMARIS SERENA
LIMIT BITCH (6-0)
1. MARTIN. TAMEDALE FENELLA
Two year old, black & white top quality bitch who looked a picture in profile when stacked. Liked her overall symmetry. Lovely head with perfect V shaped ears and a small dark eye. Appealing front assembly. Strong, short back and right tail set. Adequate back end. When standing I thought her the ticket winner. Moved ok in front but moved close behind which cost her in the challenge.
2. DAMS. TAMEDALE PANDORA
Two year old tan & white. Nicely balanced bitch with a pleasing head and good body shape. Powerful hind quarters with correct tail set. Moved out happily and was unlucky to meet the first.
3. VICKERS & DAMS. TAMEDALE SAPPHIRE
OPEN BITCH (7-2)
1. VICKERS & DAMS. TAMEDALE TOPAZ. BITCH C.C.
Two year old, tan & white. Another top quality exhibit from this kennel. Sturdy bitch of correct size and shape. Pleasing head with a flat skull, small dark eye with V shaped ears giving a good expression. Liked her strong bong and tight feet. Fair length of neck and ideal layback of shoulders. Short back and strong rear quarters. Moved parallel fore and aft. Preferred the dog for best of breed.
2. MOORE. ZETAMAZ CHASING RAINBOWS AT FINCHAM
Two and half years, white with black head. A very likeable girl having excellent proportions with no outstanding faults. One of the few who moved out with reach and drive in a happy manner. Close up to the winner and was considered for the Reserve CC.
3. HUGHES, OSBORNE & McKENNA FORGEVALE SCARAMOUCHE
BRACE (1-0)
1. MARSTON. PAIR

Judge Andrew Gullick
I would firstly like to thank the officers & committee of the Birmingham & District Fox Terrier Club for this invitation to judge at your club show. The atmosphere felt so very warm & friendly upon arrival. I was spoilt for choice in Smooths with some excellent dogs to go over, coats and presentation in Smooths was excellent across the board, as was temperaments, a sparse entry in Wires in comparison but was grateful for those who had made the effort to prepare theirs for me to judge.

Max King - Best in Show Critique
Birmingham & District Fox Terrier Club
20th November 2021
As the nation slowly returns to some sort of normality after the restrictions imposed by the Covid Pandemic, it was so satisfying to be able to spend the day in the company of like minded dog enthusiasts and return to enjoy our mutual interests. Coupled with the special atmosphere one gets from a Club Show, and on this occasion two separate breeds in the same Club, made the day even more enjoyable, and a credit to the Club and all involved.
I was pleased to award Best in Show to the Smooth Fox Terrier, Hanner’s Borovale Amber, still a youngster at 14 months, but lots to like and so well put together, very feminine appearance and super balance, liked strength of head without coarseness or exaggeration, body of good proportions, strong hindquarters developing which produced fluid movement. Will follow her progress with interest.
Reserve BIS went to the Wire, Wiggins & Westwood’s Ch Nethertonian Embrace. Super outline on this 3 year old bitch and topped with first class coat, giving pleasing picture , not as fluid on the move as the Smooth, which was the ultimate deciding factor.
Best Puppy in Show was also a Smooth, Morris’ Sanamaris Serena. Another of appealing feminine appearance, and it seemed the girls certainly had the edge over the boys today. Liked overall size and balance. Reserve BPIS was the Wire, Ford & Burton’s Selvina Isadora. Making her debut in the ring today and although at times a little apprehensive, liked her better when she was able to move out at a faster pace.
Best Veteran was the Wire Fox Terrier, Harding’s Hardirosella Heart and Soul. At 7 years old still retaining good breed type and excellent mouth, coat and furnishings not at their best. Winner of the Best Brace in Show went to Roger’s Smooth Fox Terriers, although not a matched pair in type or size, they performed well in harmony with each other.
